Learning Disabilities and the Responsible Adult Course: You Can Do This

This isn't just a policy on paper — it's something we've actually gotten to put into practice, and it's one of our favourite stories. A mother once called us because her daughter, who has a huge heart for children and hoped to work or volunteer at a preschool, wanted to take the Responsible Adult Course but has a learning disability. She asked, gently, whether she could sit down with her daughter and go through the material together, explaining things along the way. Of course — we said yes right away. As long as her daughter genuinely understood the material, working through it side by side was completely welcome. It made us happy to be able to say yes.

The course itself is built with that kind of flexibility in mind. If reading through the material on your own feels hard, you don't have to do it alone — you're welcome to have someone alongside you, reading through the content together and explaining concepts in whatever way makes sense to you. What matters most is that you understand the material, not the exact path you take to get there.

The exam follows that same spirit. It's open-book, so nobody's asking you to memorize everything cold under pressure — you can flip back through your course materials the whole way through, which takes a lot of the stress out of testing for people who learn differently. That's exactly how it went for that mother and daughter, too: they reviewed the material together, made sure the concepts had really clicked, and then she was ready for her exam.

And the learning doesn't stop the moment you're certified, either. Once you start working in a childcare centre, you'll get hands-on training there too, and you'll be given tasks that fit your strengths and comfort level. Getting certified is just the first step, not the finish line — there's real, ongoing support built in as you grow into the role. That daughter, once she got to the preschool, was given clear direction and training for the tasks she'd be doing, just like anyone starting somewhere new.
